There is no working GTA 5 browser version. An unofficial port of Grand Theft Auto V that ran in a web browser appeared on playgta5.com on 6 October 2026, went viral, and was taken offline within hours. When we checked on 17 October 2026 the domain returned an error page and nothing playable. This page explains what was claimed and what happened. It has no play link, and we do not link archived copies of the site.

What was claimed

According to news reports from 6 October 2026, the site let anyone play GTA V in a browser tab, with no install and no game purchase. Reported features were:

  • the story mode and free roam around Los Santos;
  • keyboard and mouse, controller, and touch controls on phones;
  • an initial download of about 700 MB, far smaller than the PC version;
  • the option to load a leaked map of the then-unreleased GTA 6 inside the game.

Reports said the modders built it from GTA V source code that had leaked earlier, shrank the assets with AI tools and compiled it to WebAssembly. None of this was published by the makers in a form we could check, and no one has been publicly named as the author.

What happened

Gameplay clips posted on X spread quickly on the same day. Within a few hours the site stopped working. Beebom and games.gg reported that Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, had the port removed. Afterwards the site showed only a “Thanks for Playing!” message.

Our earlier notes described the takedown as a DMCA action. We could not confirm that: no copy of a DMCA notice for the domain has been made public, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two made a statement in the reports we read. What is clear is that the port is gone and has not come back.

Current status

  • Status: Taken down.
  • playgta5.com: no playable page; on 17 October 2026 it answered with an HTTP 401 error.
  • Archived copies: some players shared snapshots after the takedown. They were reported to load only partly and to crash. They are unauthorized copies of a commercial game, so we do not link or describe them.

The port was not made or approved by Rockstar Games and reportedly used leaked source code and the game’s own assets, which nobody had the right to share. Sites that now claim to offer “GTA 5 online in a browser” or a “GTA 5 browser download” are not this port and are a common route for scams and malware. Be careful with them.

How to play GTA V legitimately

GTA V is sold for PC and current and older consoles. On PC it is available on official stores such as Steam. Rockstar does not offer an official browser version.
