GTA: Vice City WASM Port is a fan project that runs Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) in a browser tab. It works on desktop browsers and has touch controls for phones and tablets. It does not ship the game: you import an archive of the PC game files once, made from your own copy, and after that it runs offline from your browser’s storage. Because it needs your own game files, this page has no play button. The site was up when we checked on 2026-10-17.
What it is
The browser client is made by joncodeofficial and has been on GitHub Pages since 29 March 2026. It is built on reVCDOS by Lolendor, which uses the WebAssembly engine port by the DOS Zone team (specialist003, caiiiycuk and SerGen). Underneath sits reVC, the open-source reverse-engineered reimplementation of the Vice City engine from the re3 project.
That means the code that runs is a rebuilt engine, but the city, cars, music and missions all come from the original game data, which the project does not distribute.
What it can do
- The PC game in a tab: compiled to WebAssembly with Emscripten.
- Offline play: the imported files live in the browser’s Origin Private File System (OPFS) and a Service Worker serves them, so there is no streaming from a server.
- Your own saves: import, export and remove PC save games, up to eight slots.
- Custom skins: load an image to change Tommy’s street outfit (not his cutscene look).
- Cheats on demand: off by default, switchable on the setup screen; the page lists F3 for the cheat menu.
- Install as an app: it can be added to the desktop or home screen.
- Max FPS setting and a fullscreen button.
There is no multiplayer mode mentioned on the site.
What you need
- A
game.tar.gzarchive of GTA: Vice City for PC, made from a copy you legitimately own. The README gives its size as about 668 MB compressed. The port is built on the original 2002 PC engine; the project does not mention the Definitive Edition remaster. - A modern browser with WebAssembly, OPFS and Service Worker support. The README recommends Chrome 110+, Firefox 111+ or Safari 16.4+.
- Free browser storage for the extracted files.
We do not link any source for game files.
How it works
- Open the port’s page.
- Choose Select game.tar.gz and pick the archive from your own copy.
- Wait until the status says the game is ready; the archive is unpacked in a background worker.
- Optionally add saves or skins, then press Start to play.
You only import once, unless you clear your browser data or press Reset game data, which also deletes your saves and skins.
Is it safe and legal?
- It is an unofficial fan project. Grand Theft Auto belongs to Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive, who have not endorsed it.
- The repository’s own code is MIT-licensed; the game data is not covered by that licence. Only use files from a copy you own.
- Your files stay on your device; nothing is installed.
Not working?
- “Checking local game files” never finishes: make sure your browser allows site storage and is not in a private window, where OPFS may be unavailable.
- The import fails: the README says a
.raror.7zhas to be unpacked first; the page expects a.tar.gz. - Everything is gone after a while: clearing site data removes the imported game, saves and skins.
- On a phone: rotate to landscape, as the page asks.
FAQ
Can you play GTA Vice City in a browser?
Yes. The GTA Vice City WASM Port runs the game in a browser tab using WebAssembly. It does not include the game data, so you import an archive made from your own copy of the PC game first.
Is the GTA Vice City browser port free?
The web page and its client code are free, and the code is under the MIT licence. The game itself is not included; the site says you need your own legitimate copy of GTA Vice City.
Does GTA Vice City in the browser work offline?
Yes, after setup. The imported game files are kept in your browser's private storage and served by a Service Worker, so later sessions load without a new download.
Can I play GTA Vice City in the browser on my phone?
The page has on-screen touch controls for phones and tablets and asks you to rotate your device. The README still recommends a modern desktop browser, so expect desktop to be the smoother option.
Can I use my old Vice City save games?
Yes. The setup screen can import PC save files (GTAVCsf1.b to GTAVCsf8.b, or a zip containing one) into a slot, and you can download your saves again later.
Is this an official Rockstar release?
No. It is an unofficial fan project and its disclaimer says it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive.
Unofficial. This page is written by an independent directory. It is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Rockstar Games or joncodeofficial (GTA: Vice City WASM Port's author). We do not host any files, and we never link to game files, ROMs or ISOs.
