ReSkate Multiplayer: Lobbies, Servers and Hosting Your Own

How ReSkate multiplayer works in skate.: host a Steam lobby for up to 32 players, join dedicated servers, and run your own ReSkate server on Windows or Linux.

WorkingNeeds your own copyv2.0.7Updated Oct 17, 2026

ReSkate brings its own multiplayer to skate., separate from EA’s official online mode: player-hosted Steam lobbies and community dedicated servers. Everyone you play with needs ReSkate, and the same ReSkate version. When a release changes the multiplayer protocol (2.0.7 did), players and servers all have to update.

Play with friends: host a lobby

From the ReSkate menu (Insert) or the Multiplayer page in the pause menu you can host a Steam lobby for up to 32 players:

  • Public, so anyone can find it, or joined with a code you share.
  • An optional password.
  • Proximity voice chat, text chat (T) with emotes, and an optional bad-word filter.
  • Parties: invite, join, leave and promote.
  • Throwdowns (Jam, Spot Battle, S.K.A.T.E.) and co-op challenges.

When you host, your rotating-park layouts are shared with guests.

Join a dedicated server

Open Multiplayer → Servers to see the server browser. Servers can run custom maps, map rotations and votes. If a server uses a custom map from Thunderstore that you don’t have, ReSkate asks whether to download it, installs it and rejoins; large maps can take a while on a slow connection.

Host your own dedicated server

Each release has a ReSkateServer-<version>.zip (Windows) and a Linux server package. The server is a headless lobby that needs neither the game nor Steam installed.

Windows

  1. Download the server zip from the official Releases and extract the whole folder. Keep the Steam .dll files and world-layers.json next to the server.
  2. Run ReSkateServer.exe once. It writes ReSkateServer.json and stops.
  3. Edit ReSkateServer.json: at least set "name" in the server section. Start the server again.
  4. Make yourself an admin by typing role <your SteamID64> admin in the server window.

Linux

The Linux package is a native x86-64 binary (no Wine, no game install). In short: unzip it, run ./setup-linux-server-libs.sh once, then start ./ReSkateServer; it writes the config on first run like the Windows version. Details on systemd, ports and building from source are in the server’s Linux README in the repository.

Settings worth knowing

Setting What it does
name Name shown in the server browser
password Empty for anyone, otherwise players must type it
max_players 1 to 249
listed false hides the server; players then need the code
map, pool, rotation_minutes The map, the maps players can vote for, and automatic rotation
steam_token Optional Steam game server token so the server keeps the same Steam ID and join code
auto_update Installs new ReSkate releases when nobody is on (default on)
  • No port forwarding needed. Players connect through Steam’s relay. Forwarding UDP 27015–27016 is optional.
  • Join code changes on restart unless you set a steam_token; the browser always finds the server by name.
  • Custom maps: copy the map’s mod folder into a Mods folder next to the server and keep the Thunderstore folder name, so players without the map are offered the download.
  • Updates: the server checks for new releases on start and every half hour, and installs them when it is empty.
  • Bans: by default the server also turns away players on the ReSkate team’s global ban list; your own bans apply either way.

The full list of options, admin commands, votes and anti-cheat checks is in the server README.

FAQ

Can you play ReSkate online with friends?

Yes. Host a Steam lobby for up to 32 players and share its code, or join a dedicated server from the in-game server browser.

Do I need to open ports to host a ReSkate server?

No. Players connect through Steam's relay network. Forwarding UDP 27015 and 27016 is optional; it shows the server's ping in the browser and makes joining a bit faster.

Does a dedicated server need the game installed?

No. ReSkateServer is a headless program that needs neither skate. nor Steam installed. It is in a separate zip on each release, for Windows and for Linux.

Why can't I join a ReSkate server?

Players and the server must run the same ReSkate version. Update through the launcher and try again. For custom maps you also need the same map mod.

Can I play with people on the normal online skate.?

No. ReSkate lobbies and servers are separate from EA's official online mode. Everyone you play with needs ReSkate.
