ReSkate Not Working? Common Errors and Fixes

Fixes for common ReSkate problems: Insert menu not opening, Steam download did not finish, mod could not be merged, launcher missing, Linux and Mac errors.

WorkingNeeds your own copyv2.0.7Updated Oct 17, 2026

Most ReSkate problems come down to four things: the game was started the wrong way, antivirus removed a file, the ReSkate version doesn’t match (yours vs. a server’s or a mod’s), or the game download didn’t finish. Start with the quick checks, then find your error below.

Quick checks first

  1. Start from ReSkateLauncher.exe, not from skate. in your Steam library (Linux users: use the README’s launch option).
  2. Let the launcher update ReSkate. Players and servers need the same version.
  3. Check antivirus history and restore ReSkateLauncher.exe or ReSkate.dll if they were quarantined (only if you got them from the official Releases).
  4. Keep ReSkate in its own folder, not Steam’s skate. folder.
  5. Try without mods. Turn mods off or switch to an empty profile to see if one of them is the problem.

The ReSkate menu won’t open (Insert does nothing)

  • Most common cause: ReSkate isn’t running. A contributor explains that pressing Play in Steam starts the normal game without ReSkate. Use PLAY in the launcher.
  • Antivirus may have removed a ReSkate file; restore it.
  • Intel Arc GPUs: the menu could not attach to the game’s picture on Arc cards. The fix shipped in 2.0.6, so update through the launcher.
  • No Insert key (60% / 75% keyboards): change the menu key in the launcher’s Settings.

If it still doesn’t open, the project asks for logs\ReSkate.log on issue #102.

“ReSkate cannot run from Steam’s skate. folder”

Newer launchers refuse to run from inside Steam’s game folder on purpose. Make a new, empty folder (for example C:\Games\ReSkate), move ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll there and run the launcher. It installs its own copy of the game. See download and install.

“The Steam download did not finish”

The launcher downloads the supported skate. build with your Steam account, and this message means that download stopped. Contributors on issue #261 suspect a temporary problem with the download step and ask for logs. Things to try:

  • Make sure you have about 14 GB free on the drive with your ReSkate folder.
  • Run the launcher again: it checks the files and only downloads what is missing.
  • Sign in again with the Steam account that owns skate.
  • If it keeps failing, attach logs\ReSkate.log to the issue.

“ReSkateLauncher.exe not found” in the zip

You probably downloaded Source code (zip). On the release page, open Assets and download ReSkate-<version>.zip instead. ReSkateLauncher.exe and ReSkate.dll are also attached to each release as separate files.

“A mod could not be merged”

ReSkate merges mods into the game at launch. A mod made for another game build, or one that clashes with another mod, is left out with a message naming it.

  • Update the named mod, or turn it off.
  • Remove mods one by one to find the conflict.
  • If it happens with every mod, set the log level to Debug in the launcher, reproduce it, and report it with the log (see issue #107).

Game freezes or crashes with many mods

Version 2.0.7 raised the streamed texture limit and added a warning at 90% of it. If you see that warning, don’t add more mods, or remove some. Also make sure you’re on the latest stable release: 2.0.8 and 2.0.9 were pulled after crash reports.

Black screen after joining a server (Linux)

Known issue on Proton: after loading a custom map, joining a server on a different map can leave the screen black. Load the server’s map first, then join.

Linux: “Unknown GPU error” or Direct3D 12 errors

Reported on Proton with laptops that have more than one GPU. Suggestions from contributors on issue #115: use Proton Experimental, update Mesa / Vulkan drivers, and make sure the game runs on the dedicated GPU. One user fixed it by launching through Steam with Proton rather than plain Wine.

Mac: “Hardware configuration is not supported”

There is no official macOS support. On issue #9, users report this error under CrossOver, and some have it working on newer macOS versions with D3DMetal or Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit. Treat Mac as experimental.

Can’t join a lobby or server

  • Same version: you and the host or server must run the same ReSkate version.
  • Missing custom map: accept the download prompt, or install the map from Thunderstore yourself.
  • Password or code: private servers need the password or the current join code (it can change when the server restarts).

Still stuck?

Search the GitHub issues for your error message. When you report a new one, include your ReSkate version, Windows or Linux version, GPU, and logs\ReSkate.log. The community also has a Discord server, linked by a contributor in the GitHub issues.

FAQ

Why won't the ReSkate menu open when I press Insert?

Usually because the game was started from Steam instead of ReSkateLauncher.exe, or your antivirus removed a ReSkate file. On Intel Arc GPUs it was a bug fixed in 2.0.6. Compact keyboards may need a different menu key, set in the launcher.

What does "The Steam download did not finish" mean?

The launcher could not finish downloading the game build from Steam. Check disk space and your connection, run the launcher again so it resumes, and if it keeps failing post logs\ReSkate.log on the GitHub issue for this error.

Where is the ReSkate log file?

logs\ReSkate.log next to Skate.exe in your ReSkate folder. You can raise the detail with the log level setting in the launcher before reproducing the problem.

Does ReSkate work on Mac?

Not officially. Some players run it through CrossOver or Apple's Game Porting Toolkit, and an open GitHub issue tracks the "Hardware configuration is not supported" error on macOS.
