Is ReSkate Safe? Antivirus Warnings, Steam Login, Bans

Short answer: the official ReSkate download is open source and widely used, and the antivirus warnings people report are explained by the project as false positives. The real risks are fake download sites, mods you don’t trust, and the fact that it is an unofficial tool for a game owned by EA. Here is what we found in the official sources.

Only download from GitHub

The project publishes its files only on the GitHub Releases page. Popular new mods attract copycat sites with “download” buttons that may bundle anything. If a site offers a ReSkate installer, a .exe with a different name, or asks you to disable your antivirus to “unlock” something, close it.

Why antivirus flags ReSkate

Several users have reported Windows Defender (Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml), Elastic, Malwarebytes (RiskWare.GameHack.Injector) or other detections. In the issue threads, project contributors say:

• The launcher starts skate. and injects ReSkate.dll into it. That technique is how mod loaders work, and it is also what heuristic scanners look for.
• Detections like !ml and “moderate confidence” are machine-learning guesses, not matches to known malware. One contributor reported a VirusTotal score of 1 in 71 engines for an official launcher build.
• The code is public, so anyone can read or build it themselves.

If your antivirus quarantined ReSkateLauncher.exe or ReSkate.dll, ReSkate will not start. Restore them from your antivirus history only if you downloaded them from the official GitHub page.

Your Steam login

The launcher needs your Steam account to download the exact skate. build it supports. You can sign in by scanning a QR code with the Steam mobile app, so your password is never typed into ReSkate at all. The README states that the crash log never contains your Steam password or login name.

Crash reports and data

• When the launcher or game crashes, ReSkate uploads a crash dump and that session’s log to the project’s own crash server. You can turn this off with Send crash reports in the launcher’s Settings (Advanced), or the environment variable RESKATE_CRASH_REPORTING=0.
• Performance timings are only sent if you tick that option; it is off by default.
• ReSkate blocks the game’s own telemetry and crash reports to EA. Fast-travel images are still downloaded from EA’s image server.

Mods are the bigger risk

Mods change game data. Install only mods you trust, preferably from the ReSkate community on Thunderstore through the launcher. The README notes that custom Lua scripts are switched off in current versions, so a mod cannot run its own scripts. See ReSkate mods.

Is it legal? Can EA ban me?

ReSkate is a free fan project under the GPL-3.0 license and requires your own copy of the game; it does not distribute skate. itself. It is not approved by EA or Full Circle, and it keeps your offline game away from EA’s servers. We have not found any statement from EA about it as of the date at the top of this page. If that changes, or the project is taken down, this page will say so.
