Short answer (checked 19 October 2026)
Yes, Super Mario 64 runs natively on PC, unofficially, through fan ports built on the Super Mario 64 decompilation. The best-maintained one with ready builds is sm64coopdx: latest v1.5.1 (1 June 2026), for Windows, Linux and macOS, with online co-op for up to 16 players. It needs your own US copy of the game as a .z64 ROM file.
Super Mario 64 (1996) was rebuilt as source code by the n64decomp team in 2019, which made native PC versions possible. The first PC port appeared in 2020, and several projects have grown from it since. We cover sm64coopdx here because it is actively developed and has ready-to-run releases; the other projects are listed below.
What it is
- A decompilation-based port: the n64decomp project turned the game’s machine code back into C that compiles into an identical game. The PC ports compile that code for modern systems, with a new renderer in place of the N64 hardware.
- sm64coopdx is maintained by the Coop Deluxe Team and continues djoslin0’s earlier sm64ex-coop. Its README says it syncs enemies and events, so all players share the same world.
- Extras, according to its site: widescreen, uncapped frame rate, many toggleable options, and a Lua modding API with a mod site.
- It works like the decompilation projects in our recompiled games list.
Current status
| State | Working; regular releases since v1.0 (July 2024) |
| Latest build | v1.5.1, 1 June 2026 (v1.5 on 28 May) |
| Platforms | Windows, Linux (SteamOS uses the Linux build from v1.6), macOS Apple Silicon and Intel |
| Licence | No licence file in the repository |
The v1.5 notes list a built-in automatic updater, one Windows build with a choice of OpenGL or DirectX in the display settings, an infinite draw distance option, a faster lighting engine and PS4/PS5 controller rumble. v1.5.1 is a bug-fix release. Commits were still landing in October 2026; we found no v1.6 release yet.
There is no official Android version. The project’s site points to a separate Android port by other developers, which we haven’t checked.
What you need
- Your own copy of the original US Nintendo 64 release as a .z64 ROM file. The game checks the file and only accepts the unmodified US version; European, Japanese and Shindou copies are disabled in its checker.
- Windows, Linux or macOS. On first launch, drag the ROM onto the game window.
We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
Other Super Mario 64 projects
- n64decomp/sm64: the decompilation everything here is built on. It is source code, not a ready-to-play port.
- sm64ex: the long-running fork of the original PC port, with an options menu, texture packs and several renderers. It has no releases (you build it yourself), and its last commit was in December 2024.
- Render96ex: an sm64ex fork made for the Render96 model and texture packs. It is also build-from-source.
- Ghostship: a HarbourMasters port on the same base as Ship of Harkinian, with regular releases (3.0.0, September 2026). It accepts US and Japanese copies.
The 2020 Nintendo takedowns
The first PC port spread in May 2020 as ready-built downloads. Nintendo Life and PCGamesN reported that takedown notices sent for Nintendo, some through the law firm Wildwood Law Group, removed those download links from file hosts. Many YouTube videos of the port were also claimed. The notices called the shared file an unauthorised derivative work. The source code projects carried on, and today’s ports ship without the game’s assets, reading them from your own copy.
Is it legal and safe?
- sm64coopdx is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo. It reads the game’s assets from your own copy.
- Use only a copy you own.
- Get it only from the official GitHub repository or the project’s own site; copies elsewhere are not the team’s.
FAQ
Can you play Super Mario 64 on PC?
Unofficially, yes. Fan-made native PC ports built on the community decompilation run the Nintendo 64 game on Windows, Linux and macOS. The most actively maintained one with ready builds is sm64coopdx (latest v1.5.1, June 2026). You need your own copy of the game.
Is the Super Mario 64 PC port an emulator?
No. The n64decomp team rebuilt the game's C source code from the original machine code, and the PC ports compile that code into a native program with a new renderer and input layer.
What do I need to play sm64coopdx?
Your own copy of the original US Nintendo 64 release as a .z64 ROM file, and a Windows, Linux or macOS computer. On first launch you drag the ROM onto the game window. Other regions are not accepted.
Is sm64coopdx only for multiplayer?
No. It is built around online co-op for up to 16 players, but it also runs the normal single-player game, with widescreen, uncapped frame rate and Lua mods.
What happened with Nintendo and the PC port in 2020?
In May 2020, takedown notices on Nintendo's behalf removed shared download copies of the original PC port from file hosts, along with many YouTube videos, according to Nintendo Life and PCGamesN. The source code projects carried on.
Which is better, sm64coopdx or sm64ex?
For a ready-made download, sm64coopdx. sm64ex has no releases (you build it yourself) and its last commit was in December 2024. Ghostship by HarbourMasters is another actively released option.
