Short answer (checked 18 October 2026)

Yes, Driver 2 runs natively on PC through REDRIVER2, a fan project that reverse-engineered the PlayStation game back into C code, with no emulation. It is fully playable on Windows and 64-bit Linux, the latest build is 8.0 (July 2026), and it needs data from your own two Driver 2 discs.

Driver 2 (Reflections, 2000) was a PlayStation exclusive. REDRIVER2 brings it to PC. The team, led by SoapyMan, started in 2019, reached a fully playable game on 19 September 2020, and has kept improving it since. Its README says the port is “significantly improved over the original Playstation version”, with original bugs fixed and some unfinished gameplay completed.

What it is

  • A native port: according to the README, the whole game except the Memory Card menu was disassembled and translated from MIPS back to C. The team used the game’s own debugging symbols to name variables and functions.
  • PsyCross (Psy-X) replaces the PlayStation hardware underneath, the same approach later used by the Silent Hill PC port.
  • Moddable: textures and models can be replaced with the team’s OpenDriver2Tools.

It works like the decompilation-based ports in our recompiled games list. Rather than emulating the console, it runs the game’s own logic, rebuilt as a PC program.

Current status

State Working, fully playable since September 2020
Latest build 8.0, 2 July 2026 (“stable release candidate”)

The 8.0 notes list:

  • high-resolution fonts and dynamic street-light lighting;
  • restored lights, birds and a car model slot;
  • fixes to sounds and cutscenes;
  • native 64-bit Linux builds.

A PlayStation backport is mentioned in the README but not released.

What you need

  • Your own Driver 2 discs, both of them. Supported: English PAL (SLES-02993 / SLES-12993, including Platinum) and NTSC US (SLUS-01161 / SLUS-01318, including Greatest Hits). Other languages are planned.
  • Java, for a one-time conversion of the game’s videos and audio.
  • Windows, or 64-bit Linux with SDL2 and OpenAL.

The official installation instructions walk through the setup. We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.

Driver 1 and other Driver games

  • Driver (1999): no playable PC port yet. The same team’s OpenDriverEngine aims to run Driver 1 and 2 on one engine, but it is an early research project with no releases.
  • Driv3r, Parallel Lines: we found no fan port.
  • REDRIVER2 is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Reflections, Ubisoft or Infogrames. It ships no game data.
  • Use data only from discs you own.
  • Get builds only from the official GitHub repository. The project has never charged money.

FAQ

Can you play Driver 2 on PC?

Yes, unofficially. REDRIVER2 is a fan-made native PC version of Driver 2 for Windows and Linux. It has been fully playable since September 2020; the latest build is 8.0 from July 2026. You need data from your own Driver 2 discs.

Is REDRIVER2 an emulator?

No. The team translated the PlayStation game's MIPS code back into C, so the game itself runs natively on your PC. A small layer called PsyCross stands in for the PlayStation hardware.

Do I need the original Driver 2 discs?

Yes. REDRIVER2 contains no game data. It reads the data from both Driver 2 discs; the English PAL and NTSC releases are supported, including the Platinum and Greatest Hits versions.

Is there a PC port of the first Driver?

Not a playable one yet. The same team's OpenDriverEngine aims to run Driver 1 and Driver 2 on one engine, but it is an early research project with no releases.

Is REDRIVER2 free and safe?

It is free and open source under the MIT licence. Download it only from the official GitHub releases page; it was never sold, so ignore any site asking for money.
