Short answer (checked 20 October 2026)

Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial, free, native PC version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Windows, macOS and Linux (Steam Deck too). It is not an emulator. It does not include the game: you supply a ROM of your own copy and it builds its data from that. Latest release: 9.3.1 “Dewey Bravo”, 18 October 2026.

What it is

Ocarina of Time came out on the Nintendo 64 in 1998 and Nintendo has never released it on PC. In November 2021 fans finished a decompilation of the game: C source code rebuilt by hand from the original machine code. Ship of Harkinian (repository name: Shipwright), by the Harbour Masters team, compiles that code into a modern program.

In the README’s words, it is “built atop a custom library dubbed libultraship”, which stands in for Nintendo’s old N64 SDK on modern hardware, and depends on the source code from the OoT decompilation project (Shipwright README). Because the game itself runs as native code, there is no emulator layer. That is why it can run at higher frame rates and resolutions without the usual emulation glitches.

The first release, 1.0.0 “Deckard Alfa”, came out on 22 March 2022 (VGC, 22 March 2022). The repository declares no licence; the code is public, but it is not released under an open-source licence.

Current status

  • Status: Working. New releases come out regularly.
  • Latest version: 9.3.1 “Dewey Bravo”, 18 October 2026, described by the team as a quiet patch release after 9.3.0 (6 October 2026).
  • Official builds: Windows 64-bit, macOS, and a Linux AppImage the release notes label “Linux / Steam Deck”.
  • Switch and Wii U: homebrew builds stopped at 8.0.6 “MacReady Golf” (13 August 2024). The official Switch guide still points to that version. Build instructions for both remain in the repository.
  • Android, iPhone: no official builds. Unconfirmed reports of Android versions are not from the official releases page.
  • Takedowns: none found. We searched GitHub’s public DMCA notice repository for Shipwright, Harkinian and HarbourMasters on 20 October 2026 and found no notices.

What you need

  • Your own copy of Ocarina of Time as a ROM file. The supported versions list covers PAL, US and Japanese releases: the N64 cartridge revisions (1.0, 1.1, 1.2 where they exist), the GameCube versions and Master Quest. The official FAQ says US and Japanese support was added in 9.0.0 (“Blair Alfa”); before that only PAL copies worked. The README links a compatibility checker that tells you whether your file is supported.
  • A computer: Windows 64-bit, a Mac, or Linux / Steam Deck. Graphics run on DirectX 11 (Windows), OpenGL (all platforms) or Metal (macOS), per the README.

We do not link, host or explain how to get a ROM. Ship of Harkinian does not include one.

How setup works (overview)

The official setup guide has step-by-step pages for Windows, Linux, macOS, Switch and Wii U. This is only the outline; follow the guide for your system.

  1. Download the build for your system from the official releases page (or the download button on shipofharkinian.com) and unpack it.
  2. Start the game. On the first launch it asks you to select your own Ocarina of Time ROM.
  3. It extracts the game’s assets from your ROM into a data file, oot.o2r. If you also give it a Master Quest ROM, it makes oot-mq.o2r as well.
  4. The game starts. Esc opens the menu bar, where the settings and enhancements live.

After a major update (a new x.0.0 version), the FAQ says you need to generate the data file again. Older guides call the file .otr; current versions use .o2r.

Main features

Everything that changes the original game sits behind a toggle, so out of the box it plays like the N64 version.

  • Frame rate: the default is the original 20 fps; you can raise it or match your monitor’s refresh rate. The official site promises “as silky smooth as your modern GPU and monitor can handle”.
  • Resolution and widescreen: internal resolution scaling, anti-aliasing (MSAA) and widescreen.
  • Controls: keyboard and controller, with rumble and gyro aiming.
  • Mods and custom assets: put mod archives in the mods folder; the README points to tools for making them. Tab toggles alternate assets in game.
  • Randomizer: built in, with no ROM patching needed (official site).
  • Enhancements and cheats: quality-of-life options, cheats and debug tools in the menu.
  • Extras: experimental save states (F5–F7; the FAQ says they are not fully supported) and text-to-speech (F9).

Ship of Harkinian vs the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time

Nintendo is releasing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November 2026 (Nintendo, 8 September 2026). Nintendo says it is “remade with completely overhauled visuals” and fully voiced cutscenes, and its eShop page calls it built from the ground up for Switch 2, at $59.99 for the digital version (US store, checked 20 October 2026). Press outlets call it a remake; we will check what it includes on release day.

Nintendo has not announced a PC version of the Switch 2 game.

Was it made with AI?

In September 2026 Kotaku reported that members of the team said they had used generative AI tools in the code for years, which drew criticism from some fans. The port itself predates that: it is based on the hand-made decompilation.

Other projects from the same community

All of them need your own copy of the game. The full list by console is on our recompiled games list.

Ship of Harkinian is not made or approved by Nintendo. The project distributes only its own code: the README says it “does not include any copyrighted assets”, and the FAQ says the team is not distributing any Nintendo-owned IP. The game’s content comes from the ROM you provide.

For safety, download it only from the official GitHub releases or shipofharkinian.com. Sites offering a ready-made “Ocarina of Time PC” download with the game included are not official.

FAQ

Can you play Ocarina of Time on PC?

Unofficially, yes. Ship of Harkinian is a fan-made native PC version of the Nintendo 64 game for Windows, macOS and Linux, including Steam Deck. Nintendo has never released Ocarina of Time on PC. You need your own copy of the game to use Ship of Harkinian.

Is Ship of Harkinian an emulator?

No. It is the game's own code, rebuilt from the fan decompilation of Ocarina of Time and compiled into a modern program on top of a library called libultraship. It runs natively instead of emulating Nintendo 64 hardware.

Does Ship of Harkinian come with the game?

No. The README says the project includes no copyrighted assets. On first launch it asks for your ROM and extracts the game's graphics, sound and text from it into a data file (oot.o2r). We do not link or explain any way to get a ROM.

Which versions of the game does Ship of Harkinian accept?

The supported list covers PAL, US and Japanese releases, including the N64 cartridge revisions, the GameCube versions and Master Quest. Since version 9.0.0 US and Japanese copies are supported as well as PAL. The official compatibility checker linked in the README tells you if your file works.

Is Ship of Harkinian free and safe?

It is free. Download it only from the official GitHub releases page or the link on shipofharkinian.com. Other sites offering "Ocarina of Time PC download" files are not run by the developers and may bundle the game illegally or carry malware.

What is the latest version of Ship of Harkinian?

On 20 October 2026 the latest release was 9.3.1 "Dewey Bravo", published on 18 October 2026, with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Does Ship of Harkinian run on Switch?

Older versions do, as homebrew. The last release with Switch and Wii U builds was 8.0.6 from August 2024, and the official setup guide says it is still the latest for Switch. Current releases are Windows, macOS and Linux only.

Is Ship of Harkinian the same as the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time?

No. The Switch 2 game, out on 5 November 2026, is Nintendo's own new version with overhauled visuals. Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial fan project that runs the original Nintendo 64 game on PC with optional enhancements.

Is there a Majora's Mask PC port too?

Yes. 2 Ship 2 Harkinian is a separate project from the same community, built the same way, for Majora's Mask. It also needs your own copy of the game.
