Short answer (checked 19 October 2026)
Yes, Jak and Daxter runs natively on PC through OpenGOAL, a fan project that decompiled the PS2 game and recompiles it for modern PCs, with no emulation. Jak 1 is complete; Jak II and Jak 3 are in beta but can be played to the end. It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, the latest build is 0.3.9 (15 October 2026), and it needs your own PS2 disc.
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (Naughty Dog, 2001) only ever came out on PlayStation consoles. OpenGOAL brings it, and the two sequels, to PC as native programs. The project started in 2020; its first tagged releases came in April 2022 and the official launcher reached 1.0 in August 2022. Time Extension covered the Jak 3 beta in April 2026.
What it is
- A decompilation port: according to the README, over 98% of the games were written in GOAL, a Lisp-like language Naughty Dog made in-house. The team built a decompiler that turns the original code back into readable GOAL, and their own GOAL compiler that builds it for x86-64.
- Native, not emulated: the README’s stated goal is a native application that is not “emulated, interpreted, or transpiled”.
- Moddable: the launcher can load community mods, and the tools can extract and repack game assets.
It works like the decompilation-based ports in our recompiled games list, and like REDRIVER2 for Driver 2.
Current status
| Jak and Daxter (Jak 1) | Polished and complete, per the README |
| Jak II | Beta; completable, a few known issues |
| Jak 3 | Beta since April 2026; completable, more work left |
| Latest build | 0.3.9, 15 October 2026 (launcher 2.11.2, 9 October) |
| Platforms | Windows 10/11, Linux, macOS |
| Licence | ISC |
The FAQ says Jak II and Jak 3 are still in beta “mainly due to audio bugs and a few graphics issues”, which should not stop you finishing them. The README is more cautious about Jak 3, saying it has “a good amount of work left”. Recent release notes are mostly Jak 3 fixes, such as a glider crash after the sniper cannon mission.
On macOS the README describes x86-64 builds running through Rosetta. The 0.3.9 release also includes packages labelled for Apple Silicon, but we couldn’t confirm how complete native ARM support is.
What you need
- Your own retail PS2 copy of the game you want to play, as an ISO. Every retail PAL, NTSC and NTSC-J release is supported, including Greatest Hits. Demos, early builds and the PS3, PS4 and PS5 versions are not.
- Windows 10 or 11, a current Linux distribution, or an Intel Mac on Big Sur or later (the README says Apple Silicon Macs run it through Rosetta).
- A 64-bit CPU with AVX, an OpenGL 4.3 graphics card (4.1 on macOS) and about 2 GB of RAM.
- The OpenGOAL launcher from opengoal.dev, which installs the tools and builds the game from your ISO on your own PC.
We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
Was it made with AI?
We found no sign of it. OpenGOAL’s repository dates from 2020, before today’s AI coding tools, and its Q3 2026 progress report introduced a strict AI usage policy for contributions, and warns that forks or ports from other sources are not vetted by the team.
Other Jak and Daxter games
- Jak II and Jak 3: supported by the same launcher (see the status table above).
- Jak X: Combat Racing: the FAQ says it is unsure whether it will be decompiled.
- Daxter and The Lost Frontier: not planned; the FAQ says they use different engines and were not made by Naughty Dog.
Is it legal and safe?
- OpenGOAL is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Naughty Dog or Sony. The README says it includes no assets from the original games; you must provide your own legitimately obtained PS2 copy.
- The team accepts no donations, and some antivirus tools flag it falsely, according to the FAQ.
- Get it only from opengoal.dev or the official GitHub repositories. The team says other sources are not vetted.
FAQ
Can you play Jak and Daxter on PC?
Unofficially, yes. OpenGOAL is a fan-made native PC version of Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy for Windows, Linux and macOS. The project calls Jak 1 polished and complete. You need your own PS2 disc.
Is OpenGOAL an emulator?
No. The team decompiled the game's original GOAL code, wrote their own GOAL compiler and recompiles that code for x86-64, so the game runs as a native program rather than through a PS2 emulator.
Does OpenGOAL support Jak II and Jak 3?
Yes, both in beta. The FAQ says all three games are feature complete and can be finished, but Jak II and Jak 3 still have audio bugs and some graphics issues. The Jak 3 beta came out in April 2026. The README says Jak 3 still has a good amount of work left.
What do I need to play Jak and Daxter with OpenGOAL?
An ISO made from your own retail PS2 copy (any PAL, NTSC or NTSC-J release, including Greatest Hits), plus Windows 10/11, Linux or macOS, a 64-bit CPU with AVX and an OpenGL 4.3 graphics card (4.1 on macOS).
Does OpenGOAL work with the PS4 or PS5 versions?
No. Only the original PS2 retail releases are supported; demos, early builds and the PS3, PS4 and PS5 versions are not.
Is there a Jak X or mobile version?
No. The FAQ says it is unsure whether Jak X will ever be decompiled, and the README says there are no plans for a mobile release.
