Short verdict: Unleashed Recompiled (repository hedge-dev/UnleashedRecomp) is the best-known Xbox 360 recompilation and, by its own credits, the project XenonRecomp was built for. It is a finished, polished, unofficial native PC port of Sonic Unleashed for Windows and Linux. It needs files from your own Xbox 360 copy, so this page has no download or play link.
This site is not affiliated with the hedge-dev team or Sega.
What it is
Sonic Unleashed came out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008 and never had a PC release. This project takes the Xbox 360 version and rebuilds it as a native program by static recompilation: the console’s PowerPC code is converted to C++ by XenonRecomp and its Xenos shaders to HLSL by XenosRecomp, both made by the same developers. A new renderer then draws the game through Direct3D 12 or Vulkan. Because no Xbox 360 GPU has to be emulated, the README says many console quirks can be skipped, which helps performance. Background: Xbox 360 recompilation explained.
What the port adds, according to the README:
- Higher resolutions with better anti-aliasing, depth of field and motion blur
- 60 FPS by default and higher or unlocked frame rates
- Ultrawide aspect ratios
- Shader compilation during loading, so no first-time stutter in gameplay
- A new options menu, recreated achievements and Xbox or PlayStation button icons
- Quality-of-life switches such as turning off hints or the Werehog battle theme
- A Hedge Mod Manager–compatible mod loader and Steam Deck support
Current status
Checked 2026-10-17: available and maintained. Version 1.0.0 came out on 2025-03-01; the latest release is v1.0.3 (2025-04-03), and the repository was last updated on 2026-06-29. The roadmap lists action remapping, more Linux builds, high-frame-rate fixes and code modding. Known issues include some stutters that also exist on the original hardware and glitches above 60 FPS.
Takedown history: none found. GitHub’s public DMCA archive has no notice naming this project. A 2020 notice titled “SonicUnleashed” exists, but it was filed by Gameloft over its old mobile game and targets an unrelated repository.
What you need
- Your own Xbox 360 copy of Sonic Unleashed (US or EU), with the title update. DLC is optional, but the README notes it adds better lighting. We do not explain how to get game files.
- A CPU with AVX (Intel Sandy Bridge or AMD FX and newer).
- A GPU with Direct3D 12 (Shader Model 6) or Vulkan 1.2, and 8 GB of RAM.
- Windows 10 (1909) or newer, or a modern Linux distribution; 6 GiB of storage without DLC, 10 GiB with it.
Who made it
The hedge-dev team. The README credits Skyth as creator and lead developer (also author of XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp), Sajid as co-creator, and Hyper, Darío and many artists and translators.
Is it safe and legal
The source is open (GPL-3.0) and the port contains no Sega assets. The README warns not to download builds from anywhere but its GitHub Releases page. Legality depends on where you live; the project’s own requirement is files from a copy you own. Sega has not endorsed it.
Not working?
Check the README’s Known Issues and FAQ, then the repository’s issue tracker. If the installer rejects your files, the README’s first advice is to recheck the install requirements. Bugs that also happen on original hardware are deliberately kept and will not be fixed. Other projects: GTA IV recompilation and the Xbox 360 recompilation overview.
FAQ
Is there a PC version of Sonic Unleashed?
Not an official one. Unleashed Recompiled is an unofficial fan port of the Xbox 360 version for Windows and Linux, released on 2025-03-01 by the hedge-dev team. Sega has not released Sonic Unleashed on PC.
Is Unleashed Recompiled an emulator?
No. The game's PowerPC code was translated ahead of time into C++ with XenonRecomp and its shaders into HLSL with XenosRecomp, then compiled into a native program with a new renderer. No Xbox 360 emulator runs while you play.
Do I need my own copy of Sonic Unleashed?
Yes. The port contains no game assets. The README asks for files from your own US or EU Xbox 360 copy, including the title update; the DLC is optional but recommended. PlayStation 3 and Japanese copies are not supported. We do not explain how to get game files.
Was Unleashed Recompiled taken down by Sega?
No takedown was found. On 2026-10-17 the repository and its releases were online, and GitHub's public DMCA archive had no notice against it. The only "Sonic Unleashed" notice there, from 2020, was filed by Gameloft about an unrelated mobile-game repository.
Where is the official download?
Only the project's GitHub repository. The README says the team has no website or Discord server and will never distribute builds anywhere else. We do not link builds.
Does it work on Steam Deck or Mac?
Steam Deck, yes, through the Linux Flatpak build; the README recommends installing in Desktop Mode. macOS is not on the roadmap, although the team welcomes outside work on it.
