Short answer (checked 19 October 2026)
Yes, the N64 GoldenEye 007 runs natively on PC, unofficially, through the GoldenEye 007 PC Port, built from the community decompilation. It runs on Windows, Linux and Steam Deck. The latest build is 0.5.0 (7 October 2026). The full campaign and 2–4 player split-screen work, but it is pre-1.0, and it needs your own US ROM.
GoldenEye 007 (Rare, 1997) never had an official PC release. The decompilation by KholdFuzion and contributors reached 100% in August 2026, and Time Extension reported it. jkdansereau (James Dansereau) used it to build this port. The first build was out on 4 September, and the whole campaign became playable with 0.3.0 on 20 September. Notebookcheck covered the launch.
What it is
- A decompilation-based native port: the game code is the decompilation’s reconstructed C, compiled for your PC. It is not emulated, and the original binary is not machine-translated.
- A port layer replaces the N64 hardware: a software RSP (adapted from the Perfect Dark PC port) turns the game’s graphics commands into OpenGL, and SDL2 handles audio, input and windows.
- Assets come from your ROM. On first start, the port reads your ROM and generates its asset files on your PC.
It works like the decompilation-based ports in our recompiled games list.
Current status
| State | Fully playable per the README; pre-1.0 |
| Latest build | 0.5.0, 7 October 2026 |
| Platforms | Windows 10/11 (64-bit), Linux (x86-64), Steam Deck |
| Licence | MIT for the port layer; the decompiled game code is not covered |
The 0.5.0 notes list:
- 2–4 player split-screen on every multiplayer map;
- a single options menu, with the game’s own N64 control styles per player;
- fog, water and timing closer to the N64;
- crash fixes, and a steady 60 fps on low-end GPUs.
The full campaign was last played end to end for 0.4.0. Known gaps are PAL and Japanese ROMs and macOS builds. The open issues still list some crashes on specific levels, so we can’t confirm every mission is crash-free on every PC.
What you need
- Your own US (NTSC-U) GoldenEye 007 ROM, as a big-endian
.z64file, placed in adatafolder next to the program. The README lists the exact file hash to check against. - 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, or x86-64 Linux with glibc 2.31 or newer (Ubuntu 20.04+, SteamOS).
- A graphics card with OpenGL 3.0; practically any PC GPU from the last fifteen years.
- A keyboard and mouse or a controller; split-screen needs one controller per extra player.
We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
Was it made with AI?
Yes, and the project is open about it. The README says the port was developed with AI coding agents (Claude Code and a local open-weight model), directed by one person in their spare time, and it has a write-up of how that went. The game logic comes from the human-made decompilation.
Other GoldenEye 007 projects
- GoldenEye 007 decompilation: the source code the port is built on. It is not a ready-to-play port.
- GoldenEye64Recomp: an N64Recomp static recompilation for macOS and Linux, built from source with your own ROM. It is a different method, with no ready-made downloads.
- Project Midas: another decompilation-based PC port, for Windows and Linux. Its build workflow downloads a ROM and builds the releases from it, so we don’t link it.
- GoldenEye XBLA recomps (Xbox 360): these translate the unreleased 2008 Xbox 360 remaster. That version was never sold; one of those projects calls its files “the leaked XBLA build”. No one can own a legitimate copy, so we don’t cover or link them.
Is it legal and safe?
- The port is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo, Rare, Microsoft or the James Bond rights holders. Its README says the downloads contain no ROM and no game assets.
- Use only a ROM made from a cartridge you own.
- Get it only from the official GitHub repository. Each release carries a build-provenance attestation you can verify.
FAQ
Can you play GoldenEye 007 natively on PC?
Unofficially, yes. The GoldenEye 007 PC Port by jkdansereau runs the 1997 Nintendo 64 game as a native program on Windows, Linux and Steam Deck, built from the community decompilation. The latest build is 0.5.0 from 7 October 2026. You need your own US ROM.
Is it an emulator?
No. The port compiles the game's reconstructed C code from the GoldenEye decompilation for your PC. A port layer replaces the N64 hardware with SDL2 and OpenGL, so there is no emulator and no binary recompilation.
Is the whole game playable?
According to the README, all 20 solo missions and the end credits run, and split-screen multiplayer works for 2 to 4 players. It is still a pre-1.0 release, so expect bugs and the occasional breaking change.
What ROM do I need?
Your own copy of the US (NTSC-U) cartridge as a big-endian .z64 file. PAL and Japanese ROMs are not supported in the release builds yet. The port contains no ROM, and we don't explain how to get one.
Was it made with AI?
Yes, and the README says so. The port was developed with AI coding agents (Claude Code and a local open-weight model), directed by one person. The game logic itself comes from the decompilation.
What about the GoldenEye Xbox 360 recomp?
That is a different game, the XBLA remaster, which was never released. It needs files from that unreleased build, and no one can own a legitimate copy of it, so we don't cover or link it.
