Short answer (checked 21 October 2026)
Super Mario Maker 2 now has an unofficial native port for Mac, Windows and Linux. SMM2 Recomp is a static recompilation, with no emulator: its launcher recompiles the game on your computer from your own 3.0.3 dump, plus your console’s prod.keys and firmware. It brings Course World back on a fan-run course server and adds SMM1’s 100 Mario Challenge. It is early: the Mac is the reference platform, and Windows users are still reporting setup failures and crashes.
Super Mario Maker 2 came out on the Nintendo Switch in June 2019 and has never been released on PC. The GitHub account smm2recomp created the repository on 19 October 2026, published version 0.2.0 on 20 October and four more releases on 21 October, up to 0.3.2. It had just over 100 stars when we checked. The account is new and gives no name, website or social links, and we found no press coverage yet.
This site is not affiliated with SMM2 Recomp, TGRCode or Nintendo.
What it is
- A static recompilation: the game’s AArch64 code is translated to C ahead of time and compiled for your system. A native runtime stands in for the Switch’s system services, and the graphics (Nintendo’s NVN API) run on Metal on Apple devices and Vulkan elsewhere.
- Recompiled on your machine: a download holds only the launcher and the recompiler with a bundled compiler. The first start extracts your files, copies the fonts from your firmware and recompiles the game code, which takes a few minutes to half an hour.
- Forked from LAS Recomp: the recompiler started as a fork of the Link’s Awakening recompilation (MIT). The project itself is GPL-3.0.
- Source in the repository: the recompiler (Python), runtime (C and Objective-C) and course server (Rust) are all there, about 190 commits on 21 October 2026. A CI check blocks game files from being committed.
- AI help: the README says nothing about it, but 85 of the last 100 commits list Anthropic’s Claude as co-author.
It works like the other console recompilations in our recompiled games list.
Current status
| State | Early; fast-moving releases |
| Latest release | 0.3.2, 21 October 2026 (0.2.0 on 20 October) |
| macOS (Apple silicon) | Reference platform: plays courses, setup to title screen tested |
| iOS / iPadOS | 60 fps on iPad Pro with touch controls; built on a Mac and installed yourself |
| Windows 10/11 | Release package; the README says it was not yet tested on real hardware |
| Linux x64 / arm64 | Release packages; arm64 boots to the title screen in a VM |
| Android 13+ | Built yourself; plays the title course in the emulator, not tested on a phone |

From the README and release notes:
- Title, menus, course play and Course Maker test play work, with fidelity work ongoing. The README reports in-course frames pixel-identical to Ryujinx in 71 of 90 style and theme combinations on the Mac.
- 100 Mario Challenge from Super Mario Maker 1 is playable start to finish, ending and credits included.
- Endless Challenge plays against the course server.
- Course World: lists, search, download, play and leaderboards work; likes, comments and uploads are in progress.
- SMM1 features as mods, each with its own switch, such as Mystery Mushroom costumes and mid-air shell jumps, are in progress.
- 0.2.0 added shader prefetch to cut first-time stutter and an experimental 120 fps frame generation mode.
Known problems: the first 17 GitHub issues, all opened on 20 and 21 October, are mostly setup failures (applying the 3.0.3 update, “the game code didn’t build”) and Windows crashes, plus slow performance on the Steam Deck and a report that newer firmware doesn’t work. 0.3.2 fixed the update step for NSP and XCI files. We didn’t play it ourselves.
Online and course sharing
Nintendo’s servers are not used. Instead the game talks to an open-source course server that anyone can host (instructions are in the repository), which holds accounts, courses, leaderboards and challenge runs and can import courses from TGRCode’s public archive. On iOS a copy of the server runs inside the app. The README doesn’t name a public server run by the project, so check the repository for where to connect. Online multiplayer is planned, with network groundwork in progress.
What you need
- Your own dump of Super Mario Maker 2 with the 3.0.3 update: the game’s NSP or XCI and the update’s NSP, or extracted ExeFS and RomFS folders. The launcher checks your files against known 3.0.3 hashes.
- Your own console’s prod.keys and firmware. The README says they are read in place, never copied, and key values are never logged. We don’t explain how to obtain any of these.
- Optionally Super Mario Maker on Wii U, for the SMM1 mods.
- Windows 10/11 on x64 with an AVX2 CPU and a Vulkan 1.3 driver; Linux x64 or arm64 with SDL3 3.2+ and Vulkan 1.3 (Debian 13, Ubuntu 25.04, Fedora 41, Arch or newer); or macOS 15+ on Apple silicon.
- iPhone, iPad and Android have no download: you build them from source, and iOS needs a Mac to build, sign and install.
How to install
At a high level, from the official README: download your system’s package from the project’s GitHub releases, unpack it somewhere writable and start it, point the setup screen at your dump, keys and firmware, and let it set up and recompile the game. Later starts go straight to the game. The Mac app isn’t notarized, so the first start needs right-click and Open. If something fails, the README asks for the log files in a GitHub issue; they contain no key values.
Is it legal and safe?
- It is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. The README says no Nintendo code or assets are distributed, and asks you to use a legally obtained copy. One GitHub issue raises the legal questions around needing prod.keys.
- The maintainer is anonymous and the project is days old. Releases include SHA-256 checksums; get them only from the official GitHub repository. Sites offering a “Super Mario Maker 2 PC download” with the game included are not this project.

FAQ
Is there a Super Mario Maker 2 PC port?
Not an official one. SMM2 Recomp is an unofficial static recompilation of the Switch game that runs natively on macOS, Windows and Linux, with iOS, iPadOS and Android builds you make yourself. Version 0.2.0 came out on 20 October 2026 and 0.3.2 the next day.
Do the downloads include the game?
No. A release is a launcher plus the recompiler. On first start it asks for your own dump of Super Mario Maker 2 with the 3.0.3 update, your console's prod.keys and firmware, checks them, and recompiles the game on your computer. The README says the repository and its downloads contain no code, assets, text or keys from the game.
Does Course World work?
Partly, and not through Nintendo. The game talks to a self-hostable open-source course server instead, which can also pull courses from TGRCode's public archive. Browsing, searching, downloading, playing and leaderboards work against that server; likes, comments and uploads were still in progress on 21 October 2026. Online multiplayer is planned.
What is the 100 Mario Challenge here?
The challenge mode from the first Super Mario Maker on Wii U, with its difficulty select, world map and ending, added next to SMM2's Endless Challenge. The README says it is playable from start to finish.
Does it run well on Windows?
We couldn't confirm it. The README calls macOS on Apple silicon the reference platform and, when we checked, still said the Windows package was not yet tested on real hardware. Most of the first issues on GitHub are Windows and setup failures, some fixed in 0.3.2. We didn't play it ourselves.
Was it made with AI?
The README doesn't say. Most of the recent commits (85 of the last 100 on 21 October 2026) carry a co-author line for Anthropic's Claude, so it appears to be largely AI-assisted.
