GeneralsX Web (C&C Generals Zero Hour in the browser)

Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour compiled to WebAssembly with WebGPU rendering and LAN multiplayer, built on EA's 2025 GPL source release. Reads your own installed game.

WorkingSource portNeeds your own copyUpdated

You need your own copy of Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour. This port only runs with files from a copy you own; there is no download or play button here. No copy? These play in your browser right away, no files needed: Chrono Divide (Red Alert 2 in the browser), BO1 Zombies (vel.gg), GTA 3 Online (quenq III Web).

What you need

Your own installed copy of Generals and Zero Hour (Steam, EA app or disc): you pick the Zero Hour folder, then the base Generals folder. A WebGPU desktop browser (Chrome or Edge).

GeneralsX Web runs Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour (2003) in a desktop browser tab. It is the real game code, compiled to WebAssembly and drawn with WebGPU, made possible by EA’s 2025 source code release. It does not include the game data: you point the page at your own installed copy and it reads the archives straight from your disk, so this page has no play button. The site was up when we checked on 2026-10-21.

What it is

On 27 February 2025 EA published the source code of Generals and Zero Hour on GitHub under the GPL v3, alongside code for earlier Command & Conquer games. Community projects picked it up quickly: TheSuperHackers fixed and modernised the code, and GeneralsX by fbraz3 made it cross-platform.

The browser port is by Erasmo “ebellumat” Bellumat, published under wasm.ltd, which he describes as a preservation initiative for games whose code has been decompiled or released. Its repository went up in August 2026. The project credits Origami as publisher and GeneralsX as its base.

What it can do

  • The complete game: the campaigns, skirmish and the original menus, load screens and credits, with no features cut, according to the README.
  • WebGPU rendering through a Direct3D 8 translation layer.
  • Streaming assets: the game’s .big archives are read on demand from your folder rather than packed into a download.
  • LAN multiplayer over a WebSocket relay, with a link you can share with players on your network.
  • Pause menu on ESC, as in the original.

What you need

  • An installed copy of Generals and Zero Hour from Steam, the EA app or disc. The page asks for the Zero Hour folder first (the one with INIZH.big, AudioZH.big and similar), then the base Generals folder.
  • A desktop browser with WebGPU and the folder picker: Chrome or Edge.
  • Enough memory: the engine reserves about 2 GB.

We have not tested it on phones; the folder picker and WebGPU make desktop the realistic choice.

How it works

  1. Open generals.wasm.ltd in Chrome or Edge.
  2. Choose Select your game folder or installation files and pick the Zero Hour folder.
  3. When asked, pick the base Generals folder.
  4. Wait for the engine to start; your folder choice is remembered for next time.

On Steam on Windows the default folders are under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\. In Steam you can also right-click the game, then Manage and Browse local files.

  • The engine code is GPL v3 with EA’s additional terms; the web page is under MIT with an added condition. Neither covers the game data, which you supply.
  • It is an unofficial project; the README says EA has not endorsed it and does not support it.
  • Your game files are read locally by the page.

Not working?

  • “No Zero Hour archives (*ZH.big) under that folder”: you picked the wrong folder. Pick the Zero Hour install folder, not the base game.
  • Nothing renders: your browser or GPU lacks WebGPU. Update Chrome or Edge.
  • You get a file dialog instead of a folder dialog: your browser lacks the folder picker the page prefers. Chrome or Edge handle it best, and they are also the browsers with WebGPU.

For Red Alert 2 in the browser, see Chrono Divide.

FAQ

Can you play C&C Generals Zero Hour in a browser?

Yes. GeneralsX Web on generals.wasm.ltd runs the full Zero Hour game in a desktop browser tab with WebAssembly and WebGPU. It reads the game data from your own installed copy.

Do I need to own Generals Zero Hour?

Yes. The page distributes no game data. On first run you select your Zero Hour install folder and then your base Generals folder, from Steam, the EA app or a disc install.

Is the Generals source code really open?

EA published the source code of Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour on GitHub on 27 February 2025 under the GPL v3, with extra trademark terms. The game's art, sound and maps were not released.

Does the browser version have multiplayer?

It has LAN multiplayer through a WebSocket relay, with a shareable link for players on your network. Skirmish against the AI works too.

Which browsers work?

You need a browser with WebGPU. The project names Chrome and Edge on desktop. The page also needs HTTPS for SharedArrayBuffer, which the live site already has.

Who made it?

Erasmo "ebellumat" Bellumat ported it to WebAssembly as part of wasm.ltd, an initiative by Origami. It is built on GeneralsX by fbraz3. EA has not endorsed it.

Unofficial. This page is written by an independent directory. It is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Electronic Arts or Erasmo "ebellumat" Bellumat (Origami, wasm.ltd) (GeneralsX Web (C&C Generals Zero Hour in the browser)'s author). We do not host any files, and we never link to game files, ROMs or ISOs.
