Halo CE Web is a fan-made version of Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox, 2001) that runs in a desktop browser tab. It is built from the community decompilation of the original Xbox game, the same code base that the OpenCE project ports to Windows, Linux and Android. The web build is made and hosted by Mitchell Hynes.
It does not include the game itself. To play, you pick a disc image (.xiso) that you made from your own Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved. That is why this page has no play button: we only describe ports that need your own game files.
What it can do
- The full game in a browser: the campaign and the classic multiplayer maps, rendered with WebAssembly.
- Online play with friends: create a private room, choose a map (Blood Gulch, Hang ’Em High, Chill Out, Damnation and more) and a mode (Slayer, Team Slayer, Capture the Flag, Oddball, King of the Hill, Race), then share the invite link. The room view counts up to 128 players. Gameplay connects peer to peer when possible.
- Custom rules: score to win, respawn time, lives, health, shields, radar, infinite grenades and invisible players.
- Keyboard, mouse or controller: aim magnetism is switched off for mouse and on for a controller automatically.
What you need
- A disc image (
.xiso) of Halo: Combat Evolved for the original Xbox, made from a disc you own. The site points to the OpenCE community’s instructions for ripping your own disc. We do not link to other sources of game files. - A recent desktop browser (Chrome or Edge work best for WebAssembly games) and enough memory for a large download on first load.
- Keyboard and mouse, or a controller.
Controls (keyboard and mouse)
The site maps the Xbox controller to the keyboard like this:
| Xbox button | Keyboard / mouse |
|---|---|
| Move / Aim | WASD / mouse |
| Jump (A) | Space |
| Melee (B) | F |
| Reload / action (X) | E or R |
| Switch weapon (Y) | Tab or mouse wheel |
| Fire (RT) | Left mouse button |
| Grenade (LT) | G or right mouse button |
| White button | Q |
| Black button | X |
| Crouch (L3) | C |
| Zoom (R3) | Z or middle mouse button |
| Pause (Start) | Esc |
Click the game, or Focus game, to capture the mouse.
Where it comes from
Fans decompiled the original Xbox release of Halo: Combat Evolved back into readable source code. The OpenCE project (Open Community Edition) turned that into native builds for Windows, Linux and Android, with multiplayer raised to 128 players. Halo CE Web is an independent browser build of that work. Like the native ports, it ships no game data: the art, sound and maps come from your own disc image.
Is it safe and legal?
- It is an unofficial fan project. Halo belongs to Microsoft, which has not endorsed it.
- The site states that it does not provide Halo game data, to respect copyright and the decompilation team. Only use a disc image of a copy you own.
- Your disc image is read in the browser; you do not install anything.
Not working?
- Stuck on “Downloading WebAssembly” or loading: the first load is large. Wait, and try Chrome or Edge on a desktop.
- The mouse doesn’t aim: click the game window or press Focus game to capture the mouse.
- It refuses your disc image: the port expects an Xbox disc image of Halo: Combat Evolved (
.xiso), not a PC copy of the game. - For help with the website, the site asks you to contact Mitchell Hynes, not the OpenCE team.
FAQ
Can you play Halo CE in a browser?
Yes. Halo CE Web runs Halo Combat Evolved in a desktop browser tab, rebuilt from the community decompilation. You have to provide a disc image made from your own Xbox copy of the game.
Is Halo CE Web free?
The website is free, but it does not include the game. It asks for an .xiso disc image of Halo Combat Evolved for the original Xbox, made from a copy you own.
Does Halo CE Web have multiplayer?
Yes. You can create a private room, pick a map and mode such as Slayer or Capture the Flag, and send an invite link. The page shows rooms of up to 128 players.
Is Halo CE Web official?
No. It is an independent fan site by Mitchell Hynes. It is not made by Microsoft, and the site says it is not operated or supported by the OpenCE decompilation project either.
Can I play Halo CE in the browser on my phone?
This web build is aimed at desktop browsers. For phones there is a separate fan project, Halo CE Mobile, which also needs your own disc image.
Unofficial. This page is written by an independent directory. It is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Microsoft or Mitchell Hynes (Halo CE Web's author). We do not host any files, and we never link to game files, ROMs or ISOs.
