Short answer (checked 21 October 2026)

Yes, the 1996 PlayStation Crash Bandicoot now runs natively on PC, unofficially, through Crash Bandicoot Launcher by Matteo842, a static recompilation built on RecompOne, with no emulator. It runs on Windows, Linux and Android. The latest release is 2.2 (14 October 2026). It adds true widescreen, up to 240 FPS, up to 4K and mods. The game code is generated on your machine from your own USA disc (SCUS-94900).

Crash Bandicoot, Naughty Dog’s 1996 platformer published by Sony Computer Entertainment, came out only on the original PlayStation. The official way to play it on PC is the N. Sane Trilogy, a remake collection released on Steam on 29 June 2018, not the PS1 original. Matteo842 created the Crash Bandicoot Launcher repository on 23 July 2026 and published release 1.0 the same day. There have been twenty releases in all, up to 2.2 on 14 October, and work continued in the repository after that. Generation Amiga reported in August 2026 that the recompilation could be played from start to finish. The repository had about 290 GitHub stars on 21 October.

What it is

  • A static recompilation with RecompOne: the RecompOne recompiler translates the PS1 game’s MIPS code into C#, and a runtime provides enough of a PS1 (BIOS, GPU, sound, CD) for that code to run, with a modern renderer in place of the original one.
  • Built on your machine: the launcher reads your own disc image and generates and compiles the game code on first launch, into a game/ folder next to the program. The README says releases contain only tools and UI, with no disc images or generated game code.
  • Extras hooked into the game’s logic: widescreen, high frame rates and level warps rely on wurlyfox’s c1 decompilation of the game’s engine and ManDude’s decompiled GOOL scripts, which the README credits.

The repository’s launcher artwork is a redrawn background, not files taken from the game. It works like the other console recompilations in our recompiled games list.

Current status

State Playable; the README calls it a work in progress, mainly widescreen
Latest build 2.2, 14 October 2026 (first release 1.0 on 23 July 2026)
Platforms Windows 10/11 x64, Linux x86-64, Android 8.0+ arm64
Licence MIT for the launcher’s own code; RecompOne parts keep their MIT licence; the game is not covered

Features listed in the README and the 2.2 notes:

  • native 16:9 that draws more of the world with the same camera, the HUD moved to the new edges;
  • 60, 120, 240 FPS or uncapped, switchable in game, with each object at its original speed;
  • internal resolution up to 8x (4K), integer scaling, texture filters, dedither, dejitter and an optional CRT filter;
  • quick save and quick load (F5 to F8), an optional lives-saving setting, an optional box counter and optional analog movement (2.2);
  • level warp, including the cut level Stormy Ascent, and cheats such as infinite lives, god mode and fly mode;
  • C# mods, texture packs and asset overlays, rebindable keys and gamepad support.

The README also describes options added after 2.2, such as gem hints, so the next release may differ. It mentions arm64 builds for Windows and Linux, but the 2.2 release offers only the x64 Windows, x86-64 Linux and Android files.

Known problems: the README says some levels still show the edges of the original scenery in widescreen. On 21 October 2026 there were 31 open issues, mostly widescreen gaps and culling in specific levels (N. Sanity Beach, Upstream, Jaws of Darkness, Road to Nowhere), small high-frame-rate glitches, a crash in Upstream, freezes on one Android phone, and requests for Mac and Linux ARM64 builds. We didn’t play the game through ourselves.

What you need

  • Your own dump of Crash Bandicoot (USA), serial SCUS-94900, as a .chd or a .cue with its .bin (a single MODE2/2352 track). Other regions and multi-track images are not supported. Keep the image in place, because the game streams from it. We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, a GPU with OpenGL 4.3 (or 3.3) and the Visual C++ 2015-2022 runtime.
  • Or Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.34 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 35 and up) and OpenGL 3.3 or OpenGL ES 3.0.
  • Or Android 8.0 or newer on arm64 with OpenGL ES 3.2.
  • No 32-bit systems.

How to install

From the official README, at a high level: download the file for your system from the project’s GitHub Releases page (CrashBandicoot.exe for Windows, CrashBandicoot-Linux for Linux, an APK for Android). On Linux, mark the file as executable once. Start it, click Select disc to choose your .chd or .cue, and click START GAME. The first launch builds the game from your disc, which takes a minute or two; later launches start straight away. Settings, saves, the prepared game and mods all stay next to the program.

Other Crash Bandicoot projects

  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy: the official remake of the first three games by Vicarious Visions, sold on Steam since 29 June 2018. It is a different game build, not the PS1 original.
  • Crash2Recomp by Zumbo06: a separate recompilation of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, a different game. Its latest release was v0.9.6 on 8 October 2026; we haven’t reviewed it.
  • Crash Bandicoot Launcher is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Activision, Naughty Dog or any other rights holder.
  • The README says the repository has no ISOs, disc images, game assets or recompiled game code, and that a copy found bundled with a ROM or ISO did not come from the project.
  • Use only a dump of a disc you own.
  • Get it only from the official GitHub repository.

FAQ

Is there a Crash Bandicoot PC port?

The original 1996 PlayStation game never had an official PC release; the official way to play it on PC is the N. Sane Trilogy remake on Steam (2018). Since July 2026 there is also an unofficial native version of the PS1 original, Crash Bandicoot Launcher by Matteo842, for Windows, Linux and Android. The latest release is 2.2 from 14 October 2026.

Is Crash Bandicoot Launcher an emulator?

No. It uses the RecompOne static recompiler. On first launch it translates the game's MIPS code from your own disc into C# and compiles it on your machine; a runtime stands in for the parts of the PS1 the code expects and draws with a modern renderer.

Which version of Crash Bandicoot do I need?

Your own dump of the USA PlayStation disc, serial SCUS-94900, as a .chd or a .cue with its .bin. Other regions and multi-track images are not supported, and the image must stay in place because the game streams levels and audio from it. We don't explain how to obtain game files.

Does it run at 60 FPS and in widescreen?

Yes. The README lists 60, 120, 240 FPS or uncapped with objects kept at their original speed, true 16:9 that shows more of the world, and internal resolution up to 8x (4K). Widescreen is still a work in progress, and some levels show the edges of the original scenery.

Does it work on Android and Steam Deck?

There is an arm64 Android APK with touch and gamepad controls, needing Android 8.0 or newer. On Linux the launcher can add itself to the applications menu so it appears in Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game list; we couldn't confirm Steam Deck testing in the README.

Can I use mods and cheats?

Yes. C# mods, texture packs and asset overlays go into the mods folder and are switched on or off from the launcher or the in-game Dev Menu. Cheats include infinite lives, level select, god mode, fly mode and all gems.
