wc3-wasm (Warcraft III in the browser)

A WebAssembly port of the open-source OpenRealm engine that runs Warcraft III's menus, melee, all campaigns and LAN play in a browser, from your own game data.

WorkingEngine rewriteNeeds your own copyv0.2.0Updated

You need your own copy of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. This port only runs with files from a copy you own; there is no download or play button here. No copy? These play in your browser right away, no files needed: Arena of Champions, Chrono Divide (Red Alert 2 in the browser), Diablo Web.

What you need

Your own legally obtained Warcraft III installation (the port uses the Reforged-era SD data), prepared with the project's script, plus the prebuilt web client or a build of your own, served from your own machine. There is no public site to play on.

Short answer

Warcraft III can run in a browser through wc3-wasm, an unofficial WebAssembly port of the OpenRealm engine by rgnv. The README lists menus, melee, all nine campaigns of Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne, and LAN play through a bridge. There is no site to play on: you serve it yourself with your own Warcraft III data. Latest release: v0.2.0 (23 October 2026).

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) and its expansion The Frozen Throne (2003) are Blizzard’s real-time strategy games. OpenRealm is an open-source engine that reimplements Warcraft III; wc3-wasm, created on 16 October 2026, ports it to the browser with a series of 29 patches.

Looking for something to play right away with Warcraft III art? Arena of Champions is a free fan-made arena PvP game built from Warcraft III models that runs in the browser with no files needed.

What works

According to the README:

  • Boot: the Blizzard and Warcraft III logo movies, the main menu for both editions, options and the LAN and multiplayer screens.
  • Melee and skirmish: classic and Frozen Throne maps with terrain, units, pathfinding, combat and the HUD; a map browser seeded with 568 maps.
  • Campaigns: all nine, with triggers, quests, mission chains and the closing cinematics, plus localized transmissions and pre-rendered movies (you supply your own transcodes).
  • Audio: music, unit responses and voice-over from the Reforged SD data’s FLAC files.
  • Multiplayer: browser clients join a native dedicated server through the included WebSocket-to-UDP bridge.
  • Phones: a responsive canvas with touch and gamepad controls.
  • Saves: campaign progress kept in the browser.

About 50 mission sound files are missing from the SD data set and are skipped.

What you need

  • Your own legally obtained Warcraft III installation, prepared with scripts/prepare-data.sh.
  • Either the prebuilt web client from the Releases page or a build from source (git, Docker, CMake, a C++ compiler, Python 3 and Node.js).
  • A local web server: the project’s serve.py, then open the page on your own machine.

We don’t link or explain how to get game files.

Not working?

  • Black screen: check that the prepared data folder sits where the README says, next to index.html for the prebuilt client.
  • No movies: FMVs need your own transcodes in web/movies/; the game continues without them.
  • Multiplayer: start the WebSocket bridge (tools/ws-bridge) and the dedicated server first.

More strategy games in the browser: Red Alert 2 (Chrono Divide), C&C Generals Zero Hour.

FAQ

Can you play Warcraft III in a browser?

With your own game data, yes. wc3-wasm by rgnv is a WebAssembly port of the open-source OpenRealm engine that runs Warcraft III's menus, melee maps, all nine Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne campaigns and LAN games in a browser. There is no public site to play on; you set it up on your own machine.

Does wc3-wasm include Warcraft III?

No. The README says there is no Warcraft III content in the repository, its history or any release. You prepare the data from your own legally obtained installation with the project's script; the port uses the Reforged-era SD data.

Can I play online?

Browser clients can join a native dedicated server through a WebSocket-to-UDP bridge that comes with the project, and the README says real two-client sessions were tested. It is not Battle.net.

Does it work on a phone?

The README lists a responsive canvas with touch controls (tap to select, long-press for commands, drag and pinch) and gamepad support. We didn't test it.
