Short answer (checked 21 October 2026)
Pokémon Battle Advanced is a free, unofficial fan remake of the start of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen by The Daigan. Pixel-art sprites move through a lit 3D world, and battles are in real time. The demo runs in the browser on the author’s itch.io page, from Pallet Town to Brock. It is an early prototype with known bugs.
The Daigan published the demo on itch.io on 10 October 2026. The game is made in Godot 4.7. The itch.io page calls the look “HD-2D”: the people and Pokémon are pixel sprites, the towns and routes are 3D, and there is real light, rain, thunderstorms, reflective water and a clock that runs from morning to night.
We checked the itch.io page on 21 October 2026. It has a browser build (Run game), and the browser build’s game files load from itch.io without errors. Windows and macOS downloads (pay what you want, free allowed) sit on the same page. The game uses art and world models from the original games: its credits name Mystery Dungeon sprites from the PMD SpriteCollab collection and world models from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, alongside free Kenney kits and fonts.
How to play Pokémon Battle Advanced
- Open the Play link above. It goes to the author’s itch.io page in a new tab.
- Press Run game. Use Chrome or Firefox; click the page once if there is no sound.
- Start in your bedroom in Pallet Town, pick a starter and follow the familiar road: Route 1, Viridian City, Route 22, Route 2, Viridian Forest and Pewter City.
- When a battle starts, move your Pokémon around the arena and fire moves as their cooldowns allow. Dodge, sprint and jump. Type matchups, status conditions and stat changes still count.
Against wild Pokémon you can send in a second fighter, switch which one you control, or let your partner fight on its own. Trainer battles are one on one. Your rival Blue waits on Route 22, and Brock is the demo’s last boss, with an Onix that fills the arena. You can catch Pokémon, fill the Pokédex, evolve your team and have a Pokémon follow you around.
Controls
From the itch.io page:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move (hold Shift to run) |
| E | Talk, confirm |
| Esc | Menu, back; in battle, pause |
| 1-6 | Send out or recall a party member |
| W A S D (in battle) | The four moves |
| Q (in battle) | Jump |
| Hold Z + a move key (in battle) | Quick items |
| 1-6 (in battle) | Switch; hold for the second fighter |
- Controller: the left stick moves; in battle A, B, X and Y are the moves, RT sprints, RB jumps, LB (hold) opens quick items, LT swaps which fighter you control and Start pauses. D-pad down opens the party ring.
- Touch: turn on Options → Touch controls for an on-screen stick and buttons.
Can you play it on a phone?
Maybe, but we have not confirmed it. The page lists touchscreen input and the game has touch controls. Players in the comments report mixed results in phone browsers: one on iPhone could not keep a save after refreshing, another had no music. Players who switched touch controls off by accident could not turn them back on without clearing site data; the author said the next browser release would keep them on.
Known issues
The itch.io page lists these:
- Some moves still use a placeholder hit effect.
- Pokémon abilities have no effect in battle yet.
- Two-fighter battles are for wild Pokémon only.
- The first area can hitch briefly while shaders compile.
Players in the comments also mention low frame rates on some PCs and a Poké Ball that sometimes won’t throw. The author replied that performance and the Poké Ball bug are on the list for the next release.
What’s next
The author’s first devlog (17 October 2026) promises new builds on Wednesdays and a devlog every Saturday, with in-between builds for Patreon supporters. It describes Route 3, a three-floor Mt. Moon, TMs and training courts. The itch.io page still says the demo stops at the Boulder Badge, so we couldn’t confirm which of these are in the public browser build yet.
Was it made with AI?
Partly, by the author’s own account. The itch.io page’s AI disclosure reads “AI Assisted, Code”. The page doesn’t say whether any art, music or writing was made with AI.
Is it official, and will it stay up?
No. The itch.io page says it is a free, non-commercial fan project that makes no money and is not affiliated with Nintendo, Creatures, Game Freak, The Pokémon Company or Spike Chunsoft. Pokémon fan games are often taken down; we check the itch.io page every day and will update this page if it goes.
Prefer a finished-feeling Pokémon fan game? Try PokéSurvivor, PokéBonk or the Mystery Dungeon-style Web Mystery Dungeon.
Not working?
- Black screen or Run game does nothing: allow scripts and third-party content from itch.io (itch.zone), turn on hardware acceleration, and use Chrome or Firefox rather than Safari.
- No sound: click inside the game once.
- Stutter at the start: the first area compiles shaders and can hitch briefly.
- Lost save: saves live in your browser’s site data for itch.io; clearing it, a private window or another browser starts you over.
FAQ
What is Pokémon Battle Advanced?
A free, unofficial fan remake of the opening of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen by The Daigan (Daigan Games), made in Godot. Pixel-art Pokémon walk through a 3D world with lighting, weather and a day-night clock, and battles happen in real time instead of turn by turn.
Can I play Pokémon Battle Advanced in my browser?
Yes. Open the author's itch.io page and press Run game. Chrome or Firefox work best; the author says Safari has WebGL 2 issues. Windows and macOS downloads are on the same page.
How far does the demo go?
From your bedroom in Pallet Town to Brock's Boulder Badge in Pewter City, according to the itch.io page. The author's 17 October devlog describes Route 3 and Mt. Moon as well, but we couldn't confirm whether the public browser build already includes them.
What are the controls?
Arrow keys move (hold Shift to run), E talks and confirms, Esc opens the menu, and 1-6 send out a party member. In battle, W A S D fire your four moves, Q jumps and holding Z with a move key uses a quick item. Controllers work, and touch controls can be turned on in Options.
Does it save my progress?
Yes, in your browser's storage for the itch.io site. Clearing site data resets the demo, and a player on iPhone reported in the comments that saves did not survive a refresh.
Was Pokémon Battle Advanced made with AI?
Partly. The itch.io page's AI disclosure reads "AI Assisted, Code". It does not say anything else was made with AI.
Is it official?
No. It is a free, non-commercial fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo, Creatures, Game Freak, The Pokémon Company or Spike Chunsoft, and it could be taken down at any time.
Unofficial. This page is written by an independent directory. It is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Nintendo / The Pokémon Company (developed by Game Freak) or The Daigan (Daigan Games) (Pokémon Battle Advanced's author). We do not host any files, and we never link to game files, ROMs or ISOs.
