Short answer (checked 21 October 2026)

Web Mystery Dungeon is a free, unofficial Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-style roguelike by FrequentGamer, made in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It runs in the browser on the author’s itch.io page. It is an unfinished prototype: the author has stopped development, but what is there plays.

FrequentGamer posted the game on itch.io on 2 August 2026, together with its full source code. The itch.io page calls it a “playable prototype and learning resource”. On its own title screen the game is named PMD: Web Rescue.

We opened the itch.io page on 21 October 2026. The game’s files load from itch.io and the title screen offers New Game, Continue and Credits. The game uses sprites and music from the original Mystery Dungeon games; its credits say the sprites come from the community PMD Sprite Repository.

How to play Web Mystery Dungeon

  1. Open the Play link above. It goes to the author’s itch.io page in a new tab.
  2. Press Run game, then choose New Game.
  3. You start in Pokémon Square, the town. Talk to the shopkeepers, the storage and the bulletin board, take a rescue job, then head for the cave to enter a dungeon.
  4. Dungeons are turn-based: each step or attack you make, the enemies make one too. Watch your HP and Belly, recruit Pokémon you defeat, and reach the stairs.

The four dungeons in the game files are Tiny Woods (3 floors), Thunderwave Cave (5), Mt. Steel (9) and Joyous Tower (99).

Controls

From the game’s own scripts:

Key Action
Arrow keys or W A S D Move
Q / E / C Move diagonally (up-left / up-right / down-right)
Z or Space Talk, interact, confirm
X or Esc Menu, cancel
I Bag

There is no key for moving down-left; use the on-screen ↙ button. The on-screen arrows, Wait, Z/Talk, X/Menu and move buttons also work with a mouse.

Can you play it on a phone?

Maybe, but we have not confirmed it. The game has on-screen arrows and buttons, and its page is set up for phone screens. The itch.io page doesn’t say anything about phones.

What works and what is missing

According to the author’s itch.io page:

  • Works: random dungeons, the town hub, turn-based movement and combat, recruitable teammates, rescue jobs, shops and storage, animated sprites, several moves, items and dungeons.
  • Missing: story mode, a full Pokémon roster, boss battles, finished sound and music, a better save system and final balancing.

Because development has stopped, these gaps are not expected to be filled.

Saving

You can save in town only, from the menu. The save goes into your browser’s local storage, so it stays on that browser and device. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browsers starts you over.

Is it official, and will it stay up?

No. The itch.io page says it is an unofficial, non-commercial fan project and that Pokémon belongs to Nintendo, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company. No generative AI was used, according to the same page. Pokémon fan games are often taken down; we check the itch.io page every day and will update this page if it goes.

Want a Pokémon fan game that is still being worked on? Try PokéSurvivor or PokéBonk.

Not working?

  • Run game does nothing: allow scripts and third-party content from itch.io (itch.zone), then reload.
  • No music: browsers block sound until you click or press a key; start a game first.
  • Continue is empty: you only have a save if you saved in town in the same browser.

FAQ

What is Web Mystery Dungeon?

A free, unofficial fan game by FrequentGamer that recreates Pokémon Mystery Dungeon-style play in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You explore randomly generated dungeons turn by turn, take rescue jobs and recruit teammates. Its title screen calls it PMD Web Rescue.

Where can I play Web Mystery Dungeon?

In your browser on the author's itch.io page, frequentgamer.itch.io/pmdweb. Press Run game; there is nothing to install.

Is Web Mystery Dungeon finished?

No. The author has stopped development and shares it as a playable prototype. There is no story mode, no boss battles and only a small set of Pokémon.

What are the controls?

Arrow keys or WASD move, Q, E and C move diagonally, Z or Space talks and confirms, X or Esc opens the menu and I opens the bag. On-screen arrows and buttons do the same with a mouse or touch.

Yes, in your browser's local storage, and only while you are in town. Clearing site data or switching browsers loses the save.

Is Web Mystery Dungeon official?

No. It is an unofficial, non-commercial fan project, not affiliated with Nintendo, Game Freak, The Pokémon Company or Spike Chunsoft. It uses sprites and music from the original games, so it could be taken down at any time.
