Short answer (checked 19 October 2026)

SpeedBreaker is a fan-made static recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005), built with XenonRecomp. It runs natively on Steam Deck, Linux and Apple silicon Macs; Windows is coming soon. It needs your own US Xbox 360 disc: the PC version won’t work. The latest build is 0.1.7 (18 October 2026), and the project ships no game code or data.

Most Wanted had a PC release in 2005, so why a recompilation? SpeedBreaker runs the Xbox 360 edition, keeping that version’s lighting and look and adding modern options. The first release came out on 8 October 2026, followed by seven updates in ten days. Notebookcheck covered it.

What it is

  • A static recompilation: XenonRecomp translates the game’s PowerPC code into C++ ahead of time, and SpeedBreaker adds its own runtime and patches. Part of the runtime is adapted from Unleashed Recompiled. Graphics run on Vulkan, with MoltenVK on Apple devices.
  • It is the same approach as the Xbox 360 projects in our recompiled games list, such as Forza Horizon and GTA IV.

What it adds over the original

  • The Xbox 360 look: sun glare, shadows and gamma as on the console.
  • Up to 4K internal resolution, plus ultrawide and tall aspect ratios.
  • An in-game settings menu.
  • Native builds for Steam Deck, Linux, Apple silicon Macs and iOS, platforms the original PC release never reached.

Current status

Latest build 0.1.7, 18 October 2026 (first release 0.1.0 on 8 October)
Platforms SteamOS / Steam Deck, Linux x86-64, macOS (Apple silicon), iOS (experimental); Windows coming soon
Licence GPL-3.0-or-later

The release notes describe the career running and saving. The project is still pre-1.0 and the README doesn’t claim a full playthrough, so we can’t confirm it plays well start to finish.

What you need

  • Your own backup of the US (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc, as a full ISO, trimmed XISO or extracted folder. No title update is needed. The installer checks every file.
  • Not supported: PAL, Japanese and Games on Demand versions, the PC version and the Black Edition.
  • Hardware:
    • a Steam Deck;
    • or an x86-64 Linux PC with Vulkan 1.2;
    • or an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later (no Intel Mac build).

We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.

Other Most Wanted projects

Other fan projects exist: another Xbox 360 recompilation built with ReXGlue, and a recompilation of the PC version. We list SpeedBreaker because it states plainly that its downloads contain no game code or data. A sequel project, “SpeedBreaker: Carbon”, is planned but not available.

  • SpeedBreaker is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Electronic Arts or EA Black Box, the original developer. It ships no game code, data or assets, and doesn’t link to game files.
  • Use only a disc you own.
  • Get it only from the official GitHub repository or project page.

FAQ

What is the NFS Most Wanted recomp?

Does SpeedBreaker work with the PC version of Most Wanted?

No. It is built from the Xbox 360 version and needs your own US (NTSC-U) Xbox 360 disc. PAL, Japanese, Games on Demand, PC and Black Edition copies are not supported.

Why use SpeedBreaker if Most Wanted came out on PC?

It runs the Xbox 360 edition, with that version's look (sun glare, shadows, gamma), plus up to 4K internal resolution, ultrawide and tall aspect ratios, an in-game settings menu and native Steam Deck and Mac builds.
