What you need

Your own copy of the PS3 digital release God of War II HD (NPUA80491, version 01.00): the game folder with USRDIR/EBOOT.BIN and gow2.psarc, plus its .rap licence file. A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), Xcode Command Line Tools and Homebrew packages; Windows and Linux are not supported yet.

Short answer (checked 20 October 2026)

There is no Windows port of God of War II yet. The most advanced fan project, GoW2 Recomp by André Brum (andrebrumdev), is a static recompilation of God of War II HD for PS3 that runs natively on Apple silicon Macs, with no emulator. It is early: gameplay in Rhodes works, the latest kit is from 30 September 2026, and you build it on your Mac from your own PS3 copy.

God of War II came out on the PlayStation 2 in 2007 and was remastered in HD for the PS3 in 2009, later also sold separately on the PlayStation Network. Sony has never released it on PC. GoW2 Recomp’s repository went up in July 2026 and its first build kit followed on 24 September. We couldn’t find press coverage of the project.

This site is not affiliated with André Brum, sp00nznet, Santa Monica Studio or Sony.

What it is

  • A static recompilation of the PS3 version: the PowerPC (PPU) code of God of War II HD, about 69,000 functions, and the seven programs that run on the Cell’s SPU cores are translated ahead of time into C and C++, then compiled for arm64 with clang.
  • A PS3 runtime underneath: the game runs on ps3recomp, an MIT-licensed reimplementation of the PS3 operating system and libraries started by sp00nznet, extended in the developer’s own fork. Graphics go through Metal, cutscenes through VideoToolbox and sound through CoreAudio.
  • A build kit, not a ready game: the release is a kit that decrypts your own EBOOT.BIN, recompiles it and links the program on your Mac, which takes about eight minutes. The README says the repository and kit contain no game code or assets, and the kit checks every generated file against fixed hashes.
  • AI tools in the workflow: the repository has a CLAUDE.md file and a folder of “agent measurement runs”, and the README says the full technical history is kept in a Claude project memory. We couldn’t confirm how much of the code was written with AI.

Current status

State Early; gameplay in the first level works on Mac
Latest build kit Kit macOS 2026-09-30 (first kit 24 September 2026); code changes up to 19 October
Platforms macOS on Apple silicon; iPhone and Android tablet experimental
Licence MIT for the port and engine code

What the README reports as working:

  • boot, intro videos, main menu, New Game and memory-card saves;
  • gameplay in Rhodes, with combat, HUD, particles and lighting, at 45 to 60 fps on Apple silicon;
  • the Colossus of Rhodes fight, playable but with a mis-skinned part of the model;
  • music and sound effects through the game’s own SPU mixer, with timing still partly driven by the host;
  • DualShock 4, DualSense, Xbox and MFi controllers, and keyboard and mouse;
  • a SwiftUI launcher that can apply RPCS3-style data patches, such as aspect-ratio changes.

Known limits: the 30 September kit notes say fullscreen and sound were not validated in the kit build. The README lists an experimental iPhone build (about 33 fps in an earlier test) and an Android build tested on one Galaxy Tab S9 FE at about 12 fps; both are built by you and installed only on your own device. The README does not claim the game can be finished. We didn’t test it ourselves.

Windows and Linux

There is no Windows or Linux build. The README says the Windows Direct3D 12 path was neither compiled nor tested in the current work, and the scripts from the early 2026 Windows bring-up are kept only as an archive. In the open issue asking for Windows and Linux, the developer wrote on 2 October 2026 that he only has macOS and needs help with testing. Intel Macs are not supported either.

What you need

  • Your own copy of God of War II HD for PS3, the US PlayStation Network release NPUA80491, version 01.00: the game folder with USRDIR/EBOOT.BIN and gow2.psarc, and the matching .rap licence file. The README does not mention the disc version from the God of War Collection, so we couldn’t confirm whether it works. We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) and a recent macOS.
  • Xcode Command Line Tools and a few Homebrew packages (CMake, Ninja, pkgconf, SDL2), as listed in the kit README.

How to install

At a high level, from the official kit README: download the kit from the project’s GitHub Releases page, unpack it, run kit/setup.sh with the path to your game folder (it looks for the .rap file itself), wait for the recompilation to finish, then start the game with the included script or build the launcher app. Rebuilding is needed when a new kit comes out.

Other God of War II projects

  • ps2-web-recomp by snuri00: a general static recompiler for PS2 games, first shown with Gran Turismo 4. Its README says God of War II needed no game-specific code and plays from the menus through cutscenes into combat at 60 fps in Chrome, with a native window build for Linux and macOS as well. You build it from your own disc image, and its README says the generated code belongs to the game’s owners and must stay on your machine. It is a toolkit rather than a finished God of War II port.
  • For the next game in the series, see the God of War III PC port, which is further along and runs on Windows.
  • GoW2 Recomp is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony. The README says it distributes no copyrighted game code or assets and that you must own the game.
  • Everything derived from the game is generated on your own machine from your own copy.
  • Get the kit only from the official GitHub repository. Legality depends on where you live.

Not working?

  • The kit stops with “SPU programs do not match”: the 30 September kit fixed a lifter mismatch that caused this; use the latest kit.
  • Your copy is rejected: only NPUA80491 version 01.00 is supported.
  • No Windows build: there isn’t one yet; see above.

FAQ

Is there a God of War 2 PC port?

Not an official one, and no finished fan port for Windows yet. The furthest project, GoW2 Recomp by André Brum, statically recompiles God of War II HD, the PS3 version, so that it runs natively on Apple silicon Macs. It is early, and Windows and Linux builds are not available.

Which version of God of War II does GoW2 Recomp use?

The PlayStation 3 HD remaster, in its US PlayStation Network release (NPUA80491, version 01.00), not the original PS2 disc. You need that game folder and its .rap licence file from your own copy. We don't explain how to get game files.

Does GoW2 Recomp work on Windows?

Not at the moment. The README says the Windows build was neither compiled nor tested in the current round of work, and the old Windows scripts are no longer maintained. In October 2026 the developer wrote that he only has a Mac and needs help with testing.

How much of God of War II can you play?

The README reports boot, menus, saves and gameplay in Rhodes at 45 to 60 fps on Apple silicon, and the Colossus of Rhodes fight is playable with a graphics fault. A crash after the Colossus cutscene was fixed in September 2026. The README makes no claim that the game plays through to the end.

Is GoW2 Recomp an emulator like RPCS3?

No. The game's PowerPC and Cell SPU code is translated ahead of time into C and C++ and compiled for the Mac, running on a reimplementation of the PS3 system libraries with Metal graphics. The project uses RPCS3 only as a reference to compare behaviour.

Can I play God of War II PS2 without an emulator?

The general PS2 project ps2-web-recomp runs the PS2 God of War II in a browser or a native window from your own disc image, from the menus through cutscenes into combat. It is a toolkit rather than a God of War II port, and you build it yourself.
