Short answer (checked 20 October 2026)

Yes, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock runs natively on PC, unofficially, through re-wor by ronniecloud, a static recompilation of the Xbox 360 game with no emulator. It runs on Windows 10/11, supports USB guitars, and needs the files from your own Xbox 360 copy. The author calls it a test version (latest 1.1.0, 3 March 2026), with known audio lag and possible crashes.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (Neversoft, 2010) came out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii, never on PC. ronniecloud published re-wor on 2 March 2026, built on the ReXGlue SDK and on re-gh2, an earlier Guitar Hero II recompilation by YoshiCrystal9. Version 1.1.0 followed a day later.

What it is

  • A static recompilation: the game’s Xbox 360 executable has been translated from PowerPC to native x86-64 code with the ReXGlue SDK. It is not an emulator.
  • What’s in the download: the release zip holds three files, the game program (about 49 MB), a launcher and a short note for the assets folder. As with other prebuilt static recompilations, that program contains the game’s code translated for PC; the README says no game assets are included, and songs, scripts and graphics come from your own copy.
  • No licence is stated in the repository.

Current status

State Playable test version, per the README
Latest build 1.1.0, 3 March 2026 (first build 1.0.0, 2 March 2026)
Platforms Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
Licence None stated

Features listed in the README:

  • USB guitar and gamepad support through XInput, detected automatically;
  • the game’s XMA2 audio decoded and played with 6-channel sound;
  • F11 to switch between windowed and borderless full screen;
  • Discord Rich Presence.

Known problems, from the README: a slight audio delay against the note chart in some setups, rendering locked to 720p (higher resolutions are planned), possible crashes during song transitions or scene changes, and game logic at the original 60 Hz. On 20 October 2026 there were 7 open issues, including the audio drifting out of sync, whammy input, the X-Plorer guitar not working, and guitars detected as the wrong device on Linux.

Activity: the last release is from 3 March 2026 and the last code change from 6 March, and the author has not replied in any issue, so we can’t confirm the project is still maintained. We didn’t play it ourselves.

What you need

  • The files from your own Xbox 360 copy of Warriors of Rock, extracted into the port’s assets folder: the default.xex program and the data folder with the songs and scripts. The README names no region or version. We don’t explain how to obtain or copy game data.
  • 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 12 graphics card.
  • A USB XInput guitar (connect it before starting) or a gamepad.

How to install

At a high level, from the README and release notes: download the zip from the project’s GitHub Releases page and extract it, put your game files in the assets folder as the included note describes, and start the launcher or the game program. To build it yourself, the README lists Clang 20+, CMake 3.25+, Ninja and an installed ReXGlue SDK.

Other Guitar Hero projects

  • re-gh2 (Guitar Hero II, Xbox 360) by YoshiCrystal9: the ReXGlue recompilation re-wor is based on. Its README calls it a proof of concept that is slow and prone to crashes, and there are no ready builds.
  • gh3 (Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, PS3) by sp00nznet: a recompilation of the PS3 version, listed in our recompiled games list. Per its README the game’s own bot cleared all 45 Quickplay songs, but there is no guitar controller support yet, and you build it yourself.

Is it official, and is it safe?

  • re-wor is an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Activision, Neversoft or Microsoft.
  • Get it only from the official GitHub repository.
  • Legality depends on where you live; the project requires files from a copy you own.

Not working?

  • The guitar isn’t detected: plug it in before starting the game; it has to be an XInput device.
  • Notes and music drift apart: this is the known audio delay; there is no fix in a release yet.
  • Crash between songs: a known issue in the test version.

Otherwise check the open issues on GitHub. More Xbox 360 recompilations: Forza Motorsport 4 on PC, Sonic Unleashed on PC and GTA IV on PC.

No. The whole Xbox 360 executable was translated from PowerPC to x86-64 ahead of time with the ReXGlue SDK, so the game runs as a native Windows program.

Can I use a guitar controller?

Yes. re-wor is based on re-gh2, a proof-of-concept Xbox 360 recompilation of Guitar Hero II, and sp00nznet's gh3 recompiles the PS3 version of Guitar Hero III. Both are source-only, with no ready builds.
