Verdict: ut.pieter.com lets you play Urban Terror, the free Quake III-based tactical shooter, in a desktop browser tab with live multiplayer. You need no game files; the site loads Urban Terror 4.3 data on first visit and caches it. It recommends desktop Chrome, and phones are untested. It was up when we checked on 2026-10-17. Note that “UT” here is Urban Terror, not Unreal Tournament, a mix-up that went around on browser game lists.
What it is
Urban Terror began in 2000 as a realism mod for Quake III Arena by Silicon Ice Development. The team later became FrozenSand, and in 2007 the game became a standalone free download that no longer needs Quake III. It is often described as “Counter-Strike on the Quake engine”, but it plays faster than that: you can wall-jump, power-slide and climb with stamina, you bleed when hit and have to bandage, and you pick a loadout of real-world weapons and gear before each round. Version 4.3 is the current line.
On ut.pieter.com the game runs on an ioquake3-based engine the site calls ioUrbanTerror, compiled to WebAssembly and connected over a WebSocket to Pieter Levels’ own server. The front page names maps such as Casa, Turnpike, Abbey and Uptown, and shows the players online and a top players list.
How it was made
Pieter Levels posted about it on 2 October 2026. He wrote that he had first tried to get Urban Terror running in the browser about six months earlier, and that it now runs fully in the browser via WebAssembly with its own multiplayer server. He calls it “reverse engineered”; in practice it is a web build of the open Quake III engine running FrozenSand’s freely distributed game data.
Is it legal?
- Urban Terror is free, but not open source. The engine is GPL; the game code and art are FrozenSand’s, distributed free of charge under their own terms, which allow free online distribution of the unmodified game.
- The page credits FrozenSand, says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by FrozenSand or id Software, and asks players to support the original by downloading the real game.
- For the full experience with server browser, all maps and community servers, get Urban Terror from the official site.
Requirements
- A desktop or laptop browser; the site recommends Chrome.
- Keyboard and mouse, or a gamepad.
- A good connection for the first download. The game data is cached afterwards.
Controls
The site keeps Urban Terror 4.3’s stock key bindings, and settings such as gear, binds and sensitivity are saved in the browser between visits. If a map is missing, the page fetches it and reconnects on its own.
Not working?
- Long first load: the 4.3 data is large; leave the tab open until it finishes.
- The game drops to the menu on a map change: the page reloads once to fetch the new map. Wait a moment.
- Lag: there is a single server, so distance matters.
- If it is down, try Quake III Arena or Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the same platform.
